Alex Ovechkin's Future: KHL Discussions and What’s Next for the Legend (2026)

Alex Ovechkin's future in the NHL is a topic of much speculation, but the KHL President, Alexei Morozov, has shed some light on the situation. In an interview with Andrey Senchenko from RIA Novosti, Morozov revealed that the league plans to discuss Ovechkin's future with the player himself this summer. Ovechkin's contract with the Washington Capitals expires in July, and he has expressed interest in returning to Dynamo Moscow, where his professional career began.

Morozov stated, 'We're not bothering him right now, because he has an NHL contract. Sasha is very focused on the game. They're currently on a break in the [regular season], and Alexander is relaxing with his family and preparing for the important part of the season. We'll certainly discuss everything with him this summer.'

The KHL President also mentioned that he and Ovechkin often talk and see each other in the summer, discussing various topics. Ovechkin has previously expressed his desire to return to the KHL after his time with the Capitals, and Morozov confirmed that the league would be delighted if he decides to continue his career there.

Ovechkin's potential return to the KHL is an intriguing prospect, especially given his history with Dynamo Moscow. The team's President, Viktor Voronin, has stated that he is prepared to negotiate with Ovechkin after his contract with the Capitals ends. However, the Capitals' general manager, Chris Patrick, has not yet discussed retirement plans with Ovechkin.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Ovechkin has been participating in jersey exchanges with other NHL stars, including Evgeni Malkin, Brad Marchand, Anze Kopitar, Brady Tkachuk, Connor McDavid, Marie-Philip Poulin, and even LeBron James. This season, he has recorded 48 points in 59 games, and if he maintains his scoring pace, he will surpass his previous high of 65 points in the 2023-24 season.

With Ovechkin's achievements in the NHL, including 900 goals and 1,500 games played, it seems that his potential return to the KHL is a matter of when, not if. The league and Ovechkin himself are clearly interested in discussing his future, and the player's desire to return to his roots makes this a fascinating development in the world of ice hockey.
