Prepare for an inspiring journey as we celebrate the incredible Ali Brigginshaw, a true legend in women's rugby league!
The Legacy of a Legend
Ali Brigginshaw has been a pivotal figure in the professional game since its infancy, and her impact is set to leave an everlasting mark. With an impressive record of 13 tries in 56 games for the Broncos, including three premierships, 13 Origins for Queensland, and 23 Tests for the Jillaroos, she's already secured her place among the game's greatest players.
But here's where it gets controversial... Brigginshaw, after retiring from Origin footy, has her eyes set on one last glorious title with the Broncos and a World Cup victory before she rides off into the sunset. And she's not slowing down; she's even taken on a once-in-a-lifetime challenge during the off-season!
Round 1: Rivals and Leadership
In a thrilling twist, Brigginshaw teamed up with NRLW star Jamie Chapman and NRL superstars Reece Walsh and Josh Addo-Carr for an eight-part series called "Rivals." She captained the rugby league team, going head-to-head with AFL and Rugby Union.
"It was a world-first sport vs. sport competition, and I was all in when I found out it was a team effort," Brigginshaw shared. "Seeing the other sports up close, understanding their capabilities, and witnessing the power and communication of Reece and Josh was incredible."
Brigginshaw's leadership skills shone through, and she was honored to be named captain, a highlight of her career. "I've always been competitive against Chappo, and having a female leader in this competition was a brilliant concept."
The Broncos' Journey and a Fairytale Ending?
After climbing the NRLW mountain with the Broncos last season, defeating the undefeated Roosters in an epic grand final, the club is now rebuilding with a fresh batch of talented players. Brigginshaw, in her final year, is taking every session as her last, focusing on having fun and putting her all into the Broncos.
"I'm aiming to emulate Broncos legend Shane Webcke by winning a Grand Final in my last game. But I'm not getting ahead of myself; I'm enjoying the little moments in my final year," she said.
And this is the part most people miss... Brigginshaw believes in mentoring the younger players, ensuring they're ready to take over the team. "A premiership would be great, a World Cup even better, but I'm taking it week by week."
Focusing on the Broncos
Brigginshaw has decided to retire from Origins to focus solely on the Broncos' title defense. "I need to focus on the Broncos; it's been great representing my state, but the younger girls are ready to take over."
One of the Broncos' star recruits is former Knights halfback and Jillaroos star Jesse Southwell, who will be the team's new No.7. "She's the controller, and I'm happy to be on the team, playing wherever they need me."
The Broncos' double victory last season, with both the NRL and NRLW teams claiming titles, is a cherished memory for Brigginshaw. "It was a special experience, celebrating as one club."
The Future of Women's Rugby League
As a new season approaches, Brigginshaw is disappointed fans won't get to see women's teams compete in Las Vegas. "Vegas was amazing, and I think the fans will miss out on the women's teams. They loved seeing us there, and I believe we need to take the women's teams over there if the men are going."
Rivals: A Behind-the-Scenes Look
Fans will get an exclusive look at the lives of NRLW players through the show "Rivals." Brigginshaw believes it will be a surprise package, showcasing the talents of athletes like Joseph Suaalii and Matilda Scholz. "You forget how powerful Josh and Reece are until you see them up close."
The experience was safe and well-prepared, and Brigginshaw rates it as one of her career highlights. "I think athletes will be lining up for the second instalment; it was that good!"
