You know that feeling when you just can't bear to miss out on an epic adventure? That's me every time there's a chance to have some fun behind the wheel. From track days to snowy escapades, I'm always game! For almost a decade, I've been a part of the thrilling world of ice racing in upstate New York, where drivers battle it out on a frozen lake course. These races are not just fun but also affordable and accessible, requiring minimal safety gear and winter tires, no fancy roll cages needed!
But here's where it gets controversial... After four years of mild winters and no ice racing, I sold my dedicated ice racing car, a Mazda MX-5 Miata, and replaced it with a Range Rover. Little did I know, this winter would bring a twist of fate! The lakes froze, and racing was back on! Not one to miss out, I impulsively bought a car and raced it the very next day. And boy, was it worth it!
A Tale of an Impulsive Purchase
The Adirondack Motor Enthusiast Club (AMEC) confirmed a race at Peck Lake, and I was determined not to miss it. A friend's Facebook Marketplace find, a 2014 Audi A8 L, seemed like fate. With its reasonable price and winter tires already installed, it was a quick decision.
You might wonder, why an Audi A8? Well, it's not your typical ice racer, but its proven Quattro all-wheel drive system and luxurious ride made it an intriguing choice. Despite its 215,000 miles, the A8 still had some surprises up its sleeve.
The Real-Deal Limousine Experience
On the road, the A8 is a dream. It competes with the likes of Mercedes and BMW, offering a smooth ride with soft seats and a bumpin' stereo. The massaging seats and excellent sound insulation add to the luxury, though a sunroof wind noise at highway speeds is a minor gripe. There's a crack in the windshield and a check engine light, but the 3.0-liter supercharged V6 pulls strong, and the automatic transmission shifts smoothly. Even the infotainment screen, which rises from the dashboard, works like a charm. And those soft-close doors? Next-level fancy!
The Ice Racing Adventure
After a hassle-free drive to the race, the A8 faced its true test. Despite the -12-degree Fahrenheit temperature, it started without a hitch, a victory in itself! My friend's BMW, on the other hand, struggled to start, but the A8 came to the rescue, lending its battery power.
In the race, the A8, being the heaviest vehicle, wasn't expected to shine. But it surprised me! The Quattro system and the powerful V6 made for some epic drifts. I managed two third-place finishes, which is impressive considering I thought I'd be a roadblock!
While my Subaru Impreza 2.5RS remains my favorite ice racer, the A8 has left a soft spot in my heart. I considered selling it, but its performance and luxury might just keep it in my garage. Stay tuned to see what happens next with this unexpected ice racing companion!
