Tesla's China Sales: Model Y Dominance and Model 3's Struggle (2026)

Tesla's dominance in China's electric vehicle market is facing a significant challenge as the Model Y, once a runaway success, now shares the spotlight with a weakening Model 3. The latest data reveals a stark contrast in performance between the two models, with the Model Y maintaining its lead, while the Model 3 struggles to keep up with the competition. This shift in dynamics highlights the evolving landscape of the Chinese EV market, where domestic rivals are gaining ground, and Tesla's once-unmatched position is under scrutiny.

In June, Tesla delivered 52,920 vehicles in China, a 13.93% year-on-year decline, but an 11.93% increase from May. The Model Y dominated with 38,654 deliveries, a 13.81% year-on-year drop, yet a 33.70% month-on-month surge. This model accounted for a staggering 73.04% of Tesla's China sales, showcasing its enduring popularity. Conversely, the Model 3 saw 14,266 deliveries, a 14.25% year-on-year decrease and a 22.34% month-on-month decline, comprising 26.96% of the month's total.

The first half of the year paints a similar picture. The Model Y's sales stood at 172,513, a modest 0.60% year-on-year growth, while the Model 3's sales plummeted by 27.72% to 66,442. This divergence underscores the Model 3's vulnerability to new model launches from domestic competitors, indicating a shift in consumer preferences.

However, Tesla's Shanghai plant's export performance was a bright spot. In June, it exported 36,171 vehicles, a remarkable 257.60% year-on-year increase, though down 6.54% from the previous month. The Model 3 dominated exports with 18,371 units, a 395.18% year-on-year surge, while the Model Y exported 17,800, a 177.91% year-on-year rise. Exports contributed 40.60% to Tesla China's wholesale sales in June, and the plant's cumulative exports reached 228,994 vehicles in the first half of the year, a 126.58% year-on-year growth.

Tesla China's overall wholesale sales in June reached 89,091 units, a 24.43% year-on-year increase, marking an eighth consecutive month of growth. In the second quarter, wholesale sales totaled 254,551 units, a 32.77% year-on-year rise. The Shanghai plant's exports exceeded its China deliveries in a single quarter for the first time, exporting 128,394 vehicles, surpassing its previous record.

Despite these positive export figures, Tesla's overall China deliveries in the second quarter fell 2.05% year-on-year, marking a fifth consecutive quarterly decline. This decline accounts for only 26.28% of its global deliveries, the first time it has fallen below 30% since the fourth quarter of 2020. Tesla's global deliveries grew 24.99% year-on-year, primarily driven by markets outside China.

The intensifying domestic competition is a significant factor. In June, Leapmotor overtook Tesla China with 93,376 wholesale sales, while BYD maintained its lead with 397,292 passenger new energy vehicle (NEV) wholesale sales. Nio Inc. and Xpeng also set new monthly delivery records for the year to date. BYD's second-quarter sales of 557,090 BEVs outpaced Tesla's 480,126 units by 77,000.

This shift in the Chinese EV market dynamics raises questions about Tesla's long-term dominance. The Model Y's resilience and the Model 3's struggles indicate a changing consumer landscape, where domestic rivals are gaining traction. Tesla's response to this challenge will be pivotal in determining its future success in China.
